Minimal houses could be definited as the minimum space and services that a person need to live.

That concept has been used in many fields, and in spite of it has something to do with tiny houses about which we talked before, they are not exactly the same. Tiny houses, as we could see, is a movement that pretended to keep with nature and an austere way of live, deliberately sober. Nevertheless minimal houses is a kind of living house in which basic needs met, that is: sleep, eat and personal hygiene.

Those houses can be clasified in some groups, depending on the needs they satisfy and its origin:

  1. Tiny Houses
  2. Minimal house for an optimal space
  3. Minimal house for unfavorable situation

As we have just talked about Tiny Houses, we are going to talk about the second group: minimal houses for an optimal space. As it is known, one of the biggest problems that are important nowadays in the first world is site price, so that concept is used for use in the best way for architects and designers.

An example is that cube of 3 m³ designed by Jo Nagasaka. It is not designed for being produce in a massive way and for being stacked making skycrapers, it woks with this concept of minimal house.

Another houses we have to keep in mind are minimal houses for unfavorable situations, that is, in the most of the cases for indigent people. Generally they are houses for not to dream in open sky, that take up few space, are light and mount and dismantle quickly, they are usually waterproof and easy transportable.

For this kind of design some architects and designers have also bet between we can find some well adapted designs for the situation and solve the problem in a good way, such as Bubble Selter, by Thor Ter Kulve, in which it tries to use at the maximum every resource that we can find in the city, urban furniture over all.

Another case of that kind of design is the called Walking Shelter, designed by Sibling studio. It allows you to have shelter in every step you take.

Finally there are some architects that have used that concept to do some works in which join both cases, the need of optimize the space and that are also destinated for people that are in unfavorable situations. This is the case of the well-known Unité d’habitation by Le Corbusier, that was built for be home to all those families that after the Second Global World War had some problems to find its own house. It was also used because they had to rebuild lots of houses so some vertical cities were built in that time.

Therefore we can see that the minimal house is just a concept that can be applied in architecture or product/industrial design to solve easily some different problems, and as we will see it is also a concept that has been used in law for treating social living houses.
