Council Houses – Intro

19 de September de 2016 | | , Blog

When at the begining of the blog I talked about minimal houses I asked myself which were the laws about how are the spaces are regulated for protected houses, because natural and logical tencence is to take up the less space as possible. They tend to be built with poor and few material, cutting prices from everywhere. To know that, in addition to just check the current laws it was interesting to know their evolution, so there were a lot of interesting information about it, so I am going to share it in few posts of that blog.

First of all, I realised that there are not any general evaluation about council houses, not just the rest of European countries. Nevertheless this fault has been replaced by the interest of geographers, architects and historians, that have worked together to do some different evaluations to understand the situation of that sector. There is just one done by Tatjer that pretends to be complete and has been a reference for that post.

All the information that I am going to talk about can be divided in three blocks: promotors, laws and materials.

To know about promotors we will talk about who have been the organizations that have participate in constructions of council houses in Spain from half of 19th century 1960s-1970s. We will talk about public action, cooperatives, bussiness, private promotors and financial entities and of course the creation of sub-standard housing, that is selfconstruction. Here we will also talk about how the proletarian goes to be owner and how a group of people that have been renter goes to be owner and when.

In next posts we will talk about the law that started to regulate this theme, why is it importante, which are its rerestrictions and which has been its evolution. In this case we will talk about design (as far as we can, about minimal and maximum measures, organization and instalations).

Finally we will talk about the most common materials and architectonical elements of these buildings. Remember that they are cheap houses, in the most of the cases fastly built, so they have similar quality, and similar diseases too.

Therefore we will talk about some features of council houses that shows us a global view to have a conclusion of how is it right now. I am talking about that theme by coincidence, because I have always wondered about it but I could not have investigated about it before because not much people seems interested on it. And it is really important to be forgotten.
